I have the enviable set up of being able to hear if anything is amiss in the coop at night, if I keep my bedroom window open. Of course, there have been false alarms, such as a hen falling off the roost and setting off the entire coop. That pumped enough adrenolin into my system to keep me up for days. Good dog, Charlie!Susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12573143203599624833noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628662603932607754.post-2870243740521152112014-12-29T10:53:42.080-06:002014-12-29T10:53:42.080-06:00Pine martens are the scourge of chicken houses up ...Pine martens are the scourge of chicken houses up here. They seem to kill for pleasure . . . severing the heads and leaving the carcass. We once lost a whole hen house full of pullets to one of them. Coming upon that scene was one I'll not forget. The walls were splattered with so much blood it looked like paint balls had been shot off. Once a pine marten gets into a chicken enclosure, they don't seem to be bothered by the ruckus they create; they stay until every last captive chicken is dead. (Well, that little story wasn't anywhere as good to read as your narration.) I'd say you were very lucky, my friend, that the chicken damage wasn't worse. Could it be that Giant Sloppy Dog somehow saved the day?Mama Peahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03649357184167949247noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628662603932607754.post-16181072067157238352014-12-29T07:43:27.601-06:002014-12-29T07:43:27.601-06:00Oh my, what a story. I hope you either catch the rodent or whatever it is, and hope you don't lose any more chickens.Pioneer Woman at Hearthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16533698959389851926noreply@blogger.com
