And so it begins

The freezing rain started around 11 o’clock.  I just came in from another trip out to the goat / chicken barn & nobody has moved from inside or underneath the barn since I was out there earlier this morning.  It was raining when I went out first thing this morning to feed them & of course everyone wanted in the barn at the same time, because goodness knows that it’s ACID rain.  Shoving, butting, stamping of hooves, acting as if they’ve been half-starved.  I also had to toss the chicken feed underneath the barn (where the chickens were also hiding out) so they would have something to eat.  Because, you know, walking your little chicken-feet the 5 yards it is to the feeder in the rain is just way too much to ask.
In addition to the cookies & small loaf of herb bread I made last night, I also managed to make another whole wheat / cornmeal loaf this morning.
Herb bread, cookies, and whole wheat / cornmeal loaf ready to rise.

Rhiannon licking the butter off the bread.  Mama's girl all the way!

I’m going to get Rhiannon in the tub again this afternoon & maybe even take a hot shower myself.  Then vacuum the front room rug once more & make sure that the dishes are done.  If this freezing rain keeps up & we get the predicted 40+ mph winds this afternoon, I have a feeling we’ll be without power in the very near future.
Hope you are all hunkered down & safe in your homes!
Oh, here's the recipe for the bread:
1 Tbsp. yeast, 1 tsp. salt, 1/4 C. maple syrup, 1 Tbsp. vital gluten (optional), 3 C. whole wheat flour, 1 C. cornmeal.  Knead, let rest 10 minutes, knead again, place in greased loaf pan, let rise until doubled in size.  Bake for 35 minutes at 400 degrees.

  2. Thanks A.P.G.! I must admit though that I've been a "lurker" for a while. Not sure why I didn't click on the follow button, but I usually would go from MamaPea's blog straight to yours. Welcome aboard!

  4. Thank goodness we didn't either! Had rain early this morning, then about an hour of freezing rain, then blowing snow, but not much on the ground at all. The wind is kind'a bad, but I'm now worried about the low temps tonight & tomorrow night. The critters got extra grain & hay this evening, warm water & I even opened the kidding pen in the barn for the goats so they can all go in there (where it's a bit warmer) if they want.

I don't know how people in the Northern states "do" winters.....I'm obviously a wuss.
