About a year ago (my, how time goes by) I was the lucky recipient of a book from Susan over at e-i-e-i-omg! She held a giveaway for Joel Salatin's book, "Folks, this ain't normal" and yours truly was the winner.
I finished the book in like three days. And I think I even read it again. Then I took it with me to my dentist appointment and let the girls there borrow the book with the only condition that they would pass it on to someone else, and have that someone pass it on to someone else, etc., etc., etc....
My last dentist appointment found the book back in my hands after being read by at least two people. Not as many as I had hoped, but what the heck was I expecting? Most people go into the dentist's office with only one thing on their mind; getting out of there as quickly as possible. I don't know too many people who sit down to have their teeth drilled and dream about happy chickens and pasture raised rabbits, let alone want to read about them. Anyways. Where was I?
Oh, the book.
Mama Pea over at A Home Grown Journal just recently had a giveaway for a cookbook (that I didn't win, BTW. And I was soooo looking forward to getting my hands on that chocolate scone recipe) and Susan just today posted a giveaway on her blog. If you're a knitting kind of gal, hurry up and go over there and see what she's got! Oh, how I wish I knew how to knit. Or even crochet more than a single and double crochet. If you can knit socks, I totally admire you. Really. I swoon over anyone that can knit a pair of socks. How incredibly awesome is it that you can start with a bunch of twisted animal fuzz, some big pointy sticks and end up with warm tootsies? I mean, have you bought socks lately? I can't get a pair of good socks from any store around here. I must have a pile of old, holes-in-the-heel socks in my rag bag that could choke an elephant. Like, some people want to climb Mt. Everest or run a marathon or swim with sharks....I want to knit a pair of freaking socks. Maybe even the ones with the zig-zag pattern on the toes or a stripe on top. Oh wait. Where was I?
Oh, the giveaways.
Since Mama Pea & Susan have reminded me how much fun giveaways are (and since I haven't had one in forever) I'd like to pass on Joel's book to one of you!
Make a comment on this post saying you'd like to be in the drawing and tell me something nice / funny / sweet about cats (don't you just HATE it when I put that in there?!?) and you'll be entered into the drawing.
My official name-picker-outer will randomly select a name from a hat, cup, bowl or whatever other empty container I can find on Friday night and the winner will be announced on Saturday morning after barn chores. US residents only, please. And although the winner is more than welcome to keep the book on their bookshelf for all of eternity, I do hope that you'll pass it on again so others can read about Joel's personal quest to make "Happier Hens, Healthier People, and a Better World".
I would love to win that book Carolyn! I would take a cat over a dog anyday.
ReplyDeleteI remember that giveaway. Go ahead and enter me. Cats....hmm. Well, Timmy and Sassy got bonus points with me when I saw them come out of the barn with a mouse in their mouth. Good kitties.
ReplyDeleteI would love the book - we saw Daniel Salatin process chickens at the Mother Earth News Festival!!! ...and cats...here's a funny thing about cats...we have two inside cats (Freak and Fizzle) and we've named all of our outside barn cats...you ready? Captain, Jack, Sparrow, Johnny, Lockhart, Runt, Moo, Alice (a boy named Alice), Tybalt, Rusty, Tonia, Matches, Bella, Mittens...I think that's everyone!
ReplyDeleteI feel kinda sorta shamed that I haven't read that book yet so YES!, I would love to be in the drawing for it.
ReplyDeleteYou know I can never come up with a warm, fuzzy, funny story about cats 'cause I've never had one and there's not even one in my future. UNLESS we win the lottery (must remember to buy a ticket some day) and can build our dream barn. Then I will have barn cats. And (possibly) be able to relate a warm, fuzzy, funny story for you.
My husband thinks our cat is the meanest cat in the world. He jumps into his lap each night & if hubby pets him too much he bites him, every time. I tell him to quit petting him but he says that is the price the cat must pay in order to sit in his lap. b-t-w, I think he's the sweetest cat in the world.
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this book, and Joel is one of my heroes. Cat story: In the middle of a thunderstorm, a tiny kitten washed up at my front door. She is remarkable in that there is a perfect ring of tan and white around the gray of her tail, about 1.5 inches from the end. In fact, she almost looks like a Picasso, with her markings. She took to us immediately, and crawled all over me at the computer desk, climbing climbing. A friend from mexico suggested I name her Junko Taibei, after the first woman to climb Mt. Everest. The name stuck and we have had her about 6 years now.
ReplyDeleteChicken book? Ohhh I'm in!
ReplyDeleteCoco the cat is the first male cat I've ever owned. He usually stays outside unless he wants in to beg for food. When he wants inside, he jumps up on the RV bumper and sticks his head up to the window and meows. I still laugh when I see him poking his head up and looking in the kitchen window.meowing loudly. Silly Cocobutt.
My cat is an inside cat and sit by the door meowing when the dog and I are out back.
ReplyDeleteCats are the most loyal and opinionated animals I know. I love them!
ReplyDeleteThat would be a good book to read and pass on. My cats reward me with their presence and tolerate my presence when I show up unannounced,
ReplyDeleteOoooh, pick me!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter's roommate has a cat named Moose who gets really upset if you laugh around him, & especially if you laugh AT him. She calls him Moosolini when he gets crabby. He's a real character!
Me, me, me, meeee!!!! I have so many cats at my barn that when I am finished milking, they mob me for the bucket --a 4 gallon DeLaval bucket--as I try to walk to the barn kitchen. I have learned to save a bit from the previous milking and put it in a big pan OUTSIDE the barn before I get started. By the time I am finished up, they are done and not so frantic to attack me.
ReplyDeleteOh, I gotta get me a piece of the contest action. I have a cat named Bastard. Seriously. He was Little bastard when he was little, and now he's Bastard Kitty. He's a big blue point siamese.
ReplyDeleteI have Sheldon the cat - so named because of his annoying drone. Love him. Bazinga! Would love to win the book.

Count me in!
ReplyDeleteCats... well they are... fuzzy!
I'd love to enter. My cat was NICE enough to leave me half of an uneaten mouse this morning. I thought it was FUNNY when I found the other half this afternoon. (Notice how SWEET that was of her?)
ReplyDeleteI'd love a copy! I love my cat when she is always so curious about everything! What's cha doing on the computer? What cha eatin'? Where ya going?
