For Whom the Dinner Bell Tolls

The Creepy Meats have about two more days of feed left.  And I am not going to the feed store to buy any more.  So unless a bag of feed magically appears in the barn, I've got some butchering chores ahead of me.

Three of the seven Cornish crosses are bigger males so they will be the first to go in the freezer.  Even though I know I said I wouldn't buy any more feed, I'll have to feed the others for a day or so until I can get the rest of them processed.  I'll just give them some of the layer scratch and whatever leftovers we have from the kitchen.

Once I have them all processed and weighed I'll do another post showing total feed costs and a price per pound.  I'm anxious to find out how this batch comes out.

    1. I'm telling ya' OFG, you should have applied for a trademark on Creepy Meats, you'd be a millionaire! Or maybe a ten spot richer.

  2. It will be interesting to see the cost analysis. I'm really jealous for all your fresh chicken, hubby won't let me raise meat birds.

  3. Have you ever thought of buying a feather picker? We used to just skin the birds, but finally broke down and bought a picker. Wow, what a difference, scald the bird and it gets cleaned in about a minute. Much faster than by hand!

    1. We saw the one that looked like a washtub, but it was too expensive for us to justify. What kind did you get?

  4. It is a small box, about 18 inches by about 10 inches. Inside in about the middle is a cylinder with rubber fingers sticking out (very flexible). There is a grate in top with the strap steel on their sides long ways. at the back a small electric motor with a belt to the drum. This machine, I thought was expensive at a little more than a hundred dollars, but after using it its well worth it. My wife and I killed, scalded, plucked, cleaned, and had twenty full grown roasters in the freezer in three hours. I was amazed.
