Put'n & Take'n

That's what our family calls it when we clean up clutter.

And as my Mom so eloquently pointed out to me earlier this week, I've got "piles of crap everywhere".  So in order to tackle some of the clutter, I organized my animal med cabinet.  Which wasn't even within sight so technically nothing really got un-piled, just re-organized.  Is that passive-aggressive, or what?

I don't know why I haven't done this sooner.  Well, I know why.  I'm lazy and procrastinate.  But anyhow....

I went and bought myself a tool box a few days ago and went about cleaning out the cabinet.  Threw a bunch of old stuff out, found some stuff I had forgot I had even bought and managed to make myself an empty space in the kitchen cabinet.

The box is a little big, but I figure that I'm sure to end up filling it up eventually.  You know.  When I have to start buying "pig" and "cow" meds and equipment.  Even though I had originally envisioned "Everything" inside that box, it just didn't happen.  Some of the meds are kept in the fridge so I ended up putting them into small, lidded plastic box from the dollar store:

Because although I knew that the broad-spectrum antibiotic was kept next to the pickled relish and the CD/T vaccine was hidden behind the horseradish sauce, I doubt Paul would be able to find them if the need arose for it  in my absence.  Now everything is together.  And separate from the condiments.

I had bought the bigger toolbox based upon the size of one of the largest tools we have; the disbudding iron, but then decided that it was best where it was at; inside the disbudding box. Then, there's still all the birthing equipment and supplies in the Kidding Kit inside the old cooler in the barn.  Which is best where it was at; inside the barn.

So, even though I wasn't able to consolidate all of my animal doo-dads and thingies and what-nots, I do feel a bit less disorganized now.  And if Mom's lucky, I may just get rid of the grocery sack filled with old magazines before the New Year.

Maybe.

  1. I did this with all my animal stuff a couple years ago... there is a med kit that is within reach, a plastic bin of the bigger stuff, a bin for large livestock (halters, milk buckets, etc.) and a bin for small livestock (heat lamps for chicks, etc.) Then, I labeled them so I can identify them quickly. Makes it so much simpler. I've followed through and done the same with holiday decorations (what's in each box, etc) and craft supplies. Though I'm trying to cut down on plastic, I love the clear plastic bins at Fred Meyers. Feels good, too!

    1. I agree, those plastic bins and boxes are great! I'm slowly getting rid of the decade-old copy paper boxes and replacing them with the totes.

  2. Carolyn,

Nice purchase on the large tool box. It makes for a great medic bag when having to pull things out. Being organized with your medical stuff for the animals helps create that list one must make for new meds and needs (did I say that, more like wants) :-)
I so hear you on a bag of magazines, we had 3 in the closet (my husbands old riflemen mags). It was nice to get rid of them (I mean recycle).

My mom does the same thing to me when she's at my house. Good thing she hasn't been able to visit in the past year, lol.

    1. Now if I can just get that organized with OUR medical kit, I'd be doing great!

  3. Gosh, girl, you're ahead of the game! It's usually the first of the year (in a burst of well-intentioned energy) before I get around to sorting and organizing stuff that REALLY needs to be sorted and organized. My main problem when I do this is that when something is needed, I immediately go to the OLD spot where it was (handy or not), don't find it and then have to stand and strain my brain to remember where the new, better spot is that I put it! I.e., "Well, there's the pickle relish so where's the broad-spectrum antibiotics??"

    1. Oh, I'm sure I'll go to the cabinet at least a dozen times before I remember that everything is in the box. OR....I could just shove the box in the cabinet!

  4. Are you by chance getting everything in order for a last minute trip to Ohio so Paul can take care of the farm efficiently?????

  5. good idea especially box for refrigerator, maybe my bottle of C and D would not be coated with marmalade and stuck to the glass shelf.

    1. I KNEW I wasn't the only one with condiments on the same shelf as animal medications :)

  6. Not being familiar with raising livestock, I look at all those meds and wonder just how much do you spend a year to take care of your animals?
