Must......Resist......

Everyone (Tiny GardenerCountry WifeGarden now - think later!NW Edible Life) seems to be posting about seeds and garden planning recently and it's driving me nuts.  Not that I dislike reading about the different seeds and seed companies you all use, but it's making me start to twitch.  I just gott'a plant SOMETHING!  But I also have to wait at least three more weeks to start the 12-week seed.

Last year I couldn't curtail my seed-planting fever and ended up starting them too early.  And more than half of my seedlings got too leggy and they didn't make it once planted outdoors in the garden.  What a waste of eight-plus weeks.  And then I ended up buying plants at the farmer's market and at the local nursery later in the season when everything was picked over or half-dead.  Face-palm-slap.

I have a lot of older seeds that I really need to use up, but I'm also drooling over the Baker Creek and Highmowing Seeds online catalogs.  I'm hoping to be able to start a permanent Herb Garden and get an area designated (i.e. beg Paul to scrape up another patch of ground) for my Gourd Garden.

Here's my wish list for the Herb / Tea Garden:
Lemon Balm
Catnip
Spearmint
Peppermint
Bee Balm
Chamomile
Rosemary
Basil (several types)
Marjoram
Cilantro / Corriander
Chives
Oregano
Dill
Parsley

And the Gourd Garden:
Butternut Squash
Acorn Squash
Pumpkin (Pie & Carving)
Loofa (forgot the real name)

(As I'm typing this post, I can see two of the juvenile roosters going at it in the front yard.......really gott'a do something about them pretty soon)

Then there's the summer squash, the beans, peas, cabbage, lettuce,  zukes, spinach, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers..........UGH!

I just gott'a plant SOMETHING!

  1. I feel your pain. I have my notebook - for planning, my catalogs, my old seed packets, my list. I am going to try to ward off to-early-planting by making detailed plans, which I am sure I will ignore completely.

    1. Why is it that we make all these lists (half of which I can no longer find) and then just go ahead and "improvise" anyhow? Maybe list-making is therapy??

  2. Hey I was just trying to post something, ANYTHING, garden related LOL! I feared everyone was tiring of my do-nothing lately posts :) I hear you on those seeds, I start them a week or 2 later every year it seems and they end up just as healthy and strong so don't be too hard on yourself :)

    1. Erin, I've also leaned that sometimes "little late" is just as good as planting early. Especially when the frost comes again later than expected. I've also quit starting gourds / melons early; they do just as well direct sown outside.

  4. Tiny Gardener's comment made me bust out laughing!!
Hey, try growing some sprouts! They take less than a week, they are SOOO good for you and they might just stop the twitching!

  5. I'm really going to have to hold myself back. Last year I started like 150 plants indoors, spring took an extra 12 weeks to get here, and then I ended up in the hospital for emergency life threatening surgery, and every thing died without me to water. Are you getting a million seed catologes to tempt you too?

    1. I'm sorry to hear about you seedling loss last year (and your hospital stay!). Actually, I've only received two catalogs, ones that I've never ordered from at that! I usually order from Baker Creek or Highmowing Seeds but went to the store for BC so they don't have my mailing list & haven't ordered from HM in several years. So I just browse their online catalogs.

    1. It should be a recognized disease. Really. With workshops and therapy and such.

  8. You probably aren't going to visit my site then either. I've been chatting about my seed selections and will soon have a post up about my planting of said seeds.

Hopefully in a week I'll have a little green poking its head up thru the soil.

  9. My list keeps getting longer...and longer...and longer..and then I stop by every seed rack I pass, just in case they have something I need...
