Dark & Dreary Days Giveaway

Several of my blogging buddies have seemed to go through a non-blogging-funky-feeling-dreary kind of phase.  Not that I blame them.  These cold (hey, it's cold enough here for me....besides, it's all relative) and gray days do tend to make one a little depressed.

So in a feeble attempt to slap some silliness into my little blogging universe, I'd like to host a giveaway.  And not just any giveaway, but one that includes something educational and something yummy.

The "Educational" part of the Giveaway.
I have up for cyber-grabs two volumes of Mother Earth News on CD; The Second 10 Years 1980-1990 and The Third 10 Years 1990 - 2000.  I thought I had the first CD, but alas, it's been lost to the depths of my basement (and if I ever find it, I'll mail it to you, I promise!).  The date of manufacture says 2005, so I'm leaving it up to you to decide if it will work on your computer (I've copied the system requirements blurb just below).

For those of you who still have all the original M.E.N. magazines stuffed into cardboard boxes somewhere in your basement or garage, this is the perfect excuse to recycle those puppies!  Now you can have the digital version from 1980-2000 and not have to worry about moving the two-tons of boxes every time you move or clean out the basement.

Oh yeah.  And a huge honk'n bar of chocolate comes with it:
Cat in picture to show relative size of the huge honk'n chocolate bar.
Cat not included.
So enter for the CD's and the chocolate.  Or just the chocolate and give the CD's to somebody else.  Or eat the chocolate bar while perusing through two decades of Mother Earth News on your computer.  Whatever floats your boat.

So, what does one have to do to enter this giveaway?  Well, in order to get our minds into warmer and greener happy-thoughts, tell me how many seed catalogs you've received already and which are your favorite seed companies.  Or, if you're not of the gardening persuasion, tell me how much you love cats (and if you don't love cats, just lie to me).  Post your entry in the comment section.

Ok, now for the Fine Print Stuff (FPS).  Being almost totally computer-illiterate, I have no idea what it means, but here's what the back of the CD's have this to say about System Requirements:

This CD is designed to run on PC and MAC platforms.  You will need one of the following setups to run the CD:

With an IBM-compatible computer; Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition or newer, with Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 or newer, or Netscape 7 or newer.  You will need Java Virtual Machine version 1.3 (free download from www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) or newer browser plug-in with Java enabled on your browser and computer.

With an Apple computer: Mac OS X with Netscape X7.1 (available free from www.versiontracker.com) and Java (available free from www.apple.com/java).

For Mac OS 9.2.2, this CD must be run in Netscape 7.0.2 with Apple MRJ 2.2.5 (Both available free from www.versiontracker.com)

A CD-ROM drive (auto-start should be enabled)

FPS for Hershey's Symphony, otherwise known as the "chocolate bar":

The winner of the Krazo Acres giveaway dated December 30th of 2012, shall indemnify and hold harmless Carolyn Renee, owner of Krazo Acres, her husband, daughter and any livestock (except the pecker-headed rooster) from and against all claims of weight gain, additional cellulite, acne or acts of violence from others laying claim to said chocolate bar.  I understand that this chocolate bar contains 950 calories (or two hours worth of speed walking on the treadmill) and take full responsibility for consumption of those calories, regardless of promises to exercise more or skip one or more meals in order to justify the extra intake of calories resulting from stuffing chocolate bar into my maw.

And, finally, FPS for the Giveaway itself:

Contest open to US and Canadian residents only.  Prize will be shipped via USPS whenever I get my bum to the post office.  If the postal employee at the counter or your local mail carrier figures out it's a chocolate bar and eats it, I will not be held responsible.  Same goes for family members or pets/livestock.

Entries must be made on the comment form of this post.  One entry per person.

Contest ends at 11:59 pm (or around there) on Sunday, January 6, 2013, and winner's name will be randomly drawn from a vessel containing the cyber-identities of entrants (all your names thrown into a bowl from my kitchen cupboard and picked out by my daughter) on or about "Morning Time" on Monday the 7th, or whenever daughter wakes up and feels like participating.

  1. Even if I wasn't going to enter (which I am - hear me, Black Susan???) this post made my day/week/month. You could be the homesteader's Erma Bombeck. The young version :). I have now amassed 15 seed catalogs - a record! My favorites are Johnny's and Baker Creek. My favorite potato ordering catalog is Wood Prairie. I also tend to order on impulse and then shove the extras in a drawer so I am not guilted into ordering less the next year. Confession is good for the soul.

  2. You killed me with the "fine print", CR! If this was a radio ad, would you be able to talk really, really fast so I can't understand all the details? @;)

I've gotten 3 so far...Geez am I a newbie or what? Susan got 15?!? Baker Creek, Southern Exposure and Dixondale (for onions) which I will be planting come February.

Waaa Haa Ha...to all ya'll still stuck in the snow till May!

SM actually had a dream we adopted another cat. An orange and white long hair. Can you imagine what my Three Stooges would think of that?

  3. O. M. G. You make me laugh, girl. I have only received two catalogs so far and neither of them are Baker Creek (my favorite). Although considering what happened to the garden last year (re-planting three times) Baker Creek best be sending me their catalog soon because I gots me some money to spend!!

Cats. I love 'em. I just wish they wouldn't be so scared of my bedroom. The new baby kitty is scared to death of my bed. I think our room is haunted. But I still love cats.

  4. You kill me!!! I have named my surviving rooster Peckerhead!!! I swear we're twins LOL!!!!
I have gotten three seed catalogs, Johnny's, High Mowing, and Bakers Creek ☺ I am counting the days until spring, chipping ice everyday is the pits!!!!!

  5. Funny! Ok, I have the CDs but neighbors of mine are starting to raise goats, bees, herbs to make products, etc. and are not internet people so the CDs would be perfect. I would, of course, keep the chocolate because I wouldn't want to burden them with more calories. To your questions- cats- I love them. I have 2 poor little orphans that live in the garage against my husband's wishes but since it's for cats, I tell them to stay in my half of the garage (LOL). Then there are the 4 strays that live beneath the porch or in brush piles but come twice daily for food. I need someone to help me build a kitty motel for them! Seed catalogues- I have received 2 paper copies, Richters and Territorial- so far. I like Baker's Creek or Botanical Interests are great. Richters is from Canada. They have some herbs I didn't see elsewhere but also a few that the US bans so you need to watch the descriptions before ordering.

  6. I've received three so far. Baker Creek, Johnny's and Gurney's. I'm not sure I have a favorite. I like looking at them all!

  7. You are a nut! (but a nut with chocolate...hmmm....) So far I've only had the chance to drool over three seed catalogs. Johnny's, Bountiful Gardens and R. Shumway. I really like the look and feel of the Shumway catalog. It's got that "homey" feeling to it. After reading everyone's comments here, what I really want to know is...... WHERE IS MY BAKER CREEK CATALOG???????? ;o)

  8. Being a gardener, and knowing that even on a diet, chocolate is good for you, and promising (if I should win) that I will show restraint and nibble slowly on just one square a day....count me in! I have Baker Creek, The Cook's Garden, Harris Seeds, Burpee, Seed Savers, Gurney's, Pinetree and Totally Tomatoes so far, but I'll be buying my Ed Hume seeds off the rack early in the season, when they always go on sale at buy one, get one half price. I refuse to pay the totally absurd shipping charges for most mail orders. If I did give in, I'd probably order from Johnny's, who haven't sent me their 2013 catalog yet.

  9. Chocolate...that's the way I want to start my new year. :)

  11. We moved this summer and I haven't received any catalogs yet! I just ordered a Bakers Creek and I'll also send for a Territorial. Love your blog. Now I need to go look up some of the catalogs readers posted that I haven't heard about before!

  12. I have never gotten on a seed catalog's mailing list. So I'm reading your comments with the intention of contacting the ones recommended- while my cat is drooling over the picture of your chocolate bar. Count me in :)

  13. You have missed your calling, you should clearly be writing legal mumbo-jumbo! LOL! Okay, I have gotten 7 catalogs so far, one of my favorites is Baker Creek, of which I received TWO of those garden-pornographic packed releases LOL, however I am finding I do most of my actual ordering now through Southern Exposure now, which has many of the same offerings as well as some lovely hillbilly varieties just for my area :)

  14. I have just one seed cataloge so far. But I love Baker's Creek. As for cats, As much as I try to hate my cat that attacks my hand every night as I try to sleep, I just can't. I love the fat critter. But dont tell anybody. I have a reputation, you know.

  15. I'm glad someone's adresses this "dark days" blahs. Me too! It's been gray for days, give me some freaking sun!!! I subsribed to MEN for years :)The only current print catalog, I just got this month is the Seed Savers Exchange, new to me, with lots of heirloom variety. I tend to buy heirloom starts locally, but will switch more to seeds now that I have an indoor rack with light. I'll set that up in March or so...

  16. Oh, dear CR, you do bring such sunshine into all our lives with your witty writing. You have a real talent.

Please don't put my name in the hat for the drawing. I don't care that much for chocolate (don't hate me for that . . . or tell my husband I passed up winning that giant bar for him) and we have boxes and boxes of all TMEN magazines that I fear Papa Pea will never part with so I'm being mean and saying he can't have the CDs. (I'm rotten that way.)

Seed catalogs? I currently have 6 but those are only the faves that I've saved. (The rest have gone into recycling. Maybe 6 of those, too.) I order most of my seeds from Johnny's and berry plants from Indiana Berry & Plant Co.

  17. I have only gotten one seed catalog: Baker's Creek. Unless you want to count the Dutch Gardens catalog for bulbs (or, as we say here in the South, bubs). It's ok, though, because I've already gone through it 12 times, so it's just as good as getting a bunch. They're the only ones I order from anyway.

  18. So far I've only received one. Jung Seeds and Plants... It is usually the first one that comes. I get 5 or 6. I like this one and the seed saver one.

  19. CR,

You've made my day, I read your fine print and laughed my a$$ off. Baker Creek has sent me 4 beautiful catalogs, I guess their sending me a message.....only order from US!!! Please enter me in your give away! And give your cutie of a cat a scratch behind the ears for me.

  20. Oddly, I only receive a few catalogs a year, but my favorite one by far is Baker Creek.

    ReplyDelete
  21. So far. Five. I am leaning towards Territorial cause they have some lovely heirloom stuff like maters that look and taste like maters. And garlic. And shallots. (oops, they need to be planted in the fall.)

  22. I forgot- sign me up for the drawing please!

  23. OOOOO chocolate... Yum, please enter me for the drawing. We were driving home tonight and saw a really scared kitty on the road. Turns out the neighbor brought home two almost-feral kitties today from the local shelter and just opened the cage and one ran away-imagine that! Grrr... just made me mad. Now there's a poor scared kitty (who luckily is neutered) out in the cold.

  24. Yes, please put me in the hat for the drawing. I get Mother Earth emails and have decided that once my forth coming move is over, I will get a bonifide subscription too. So, I would love to win the CDs for sure. And the chocolate??? I am a woman ...enough said. Have not received any seed catologs yet but maybe that is because I usually buy locally.

  25. Please enter me in the drawing!I do love cats and CHOCOLATE! Have only gotten 3 seed catalogs so far. My favorite seed company is Victory Seeds!
