Praying for Persimmons
My wild grapes bit the dust because of the insane heat this summer, and the few wild plum trees we have also took a beating so I figured I was out of luck in the wild fruit department this year. But then I stumbled upon these:
Persimmons!
Godzilla managed to spare this little patch of persimmon trees (imagine me screaming at the top of my lungs, arms flailing around, trying to tell Paul not to bulldoze a particular area....while he's ON the dozer). There are about seven or eight small trees in the goat pen and they haven't eaten the bark off them. They've managed to eat the bark off the cedars, but thankfully leave the persimmons alone.
I know there are a few other small patches of persimmons on our place because I saw them last year, so I think I may take a wander in the back 30 and see if I can find them again. I didn't gather enough last year to make more than a loaf or two of persimmon bread, but this year I'm going to try really hard to get enough to make some persimmon butter to make up for the lack of grape jelly in the pantry. Now if they just make it until November!
Crossing my fingers that they survive! Do they even grow here in MN? I guess I've never seen them before. What do they taste like?

ReplyDeleteThey taste VERY sweet, smooshy, not citris-like, I really don't know how to describe it. Doesn't really taste like "anything" I can compare it to. They are VERY smooshy/messy you just kind'a pick them off the ground (that's when they are ripe) and squish 'em in your mouth, spitting out the seeds (like the size of squash seeds) and the skins. God help you if you eat an unripe persimmon. I did that once and I swear I thought I was going to die! It doesn't really make you pucker up, although some liken it to being the tartest thing you've ever tasted. Imagine something taking ALL of the moisture out of your mouth/throat and NOT being able to swallow or spit the taste out for about a half hour.
ReplyDeleteI haven't checked our persimmons yet, but if it is like most fruit in this area, they won't have anything.
ReplyDeleteEven the local apple orchard has very little fruit this year and my trees didn't even bloom.

ReplyDeleteI read your comments on PACNW Righty's blog sometimes. I read he comment about Ron Paul when you posted about the candidates.
Just wanted you to know that I know who Ron Paul is. Our friends here in NC, S & J, love the guy and voted for him last election...They are really stumping for him in their emails to people....They ay that he is the only really conservative Christian to be running and the media wants him shut down....
I am not a fan of spending billions on wars either, but this is a fact of life in the 21st. century....All part of the plan laid out in Revelation......
Glad to hear that you like him as well....I am still undecided as to who to vote for...definitely NOT Romney!!!!!
